Paul Downs Palmer

Paul Downs Palmer, 97, died Jan. 20, 2005, at Sac Osage Hospital in Osceola, Mo. He was born in Havensville, Kan., Aug. 29, 1908, to Samuel Rural and Mary Olive Downs Palmer. On Nov. 28, 1941, in Liberty, Mo., he married Helen Faye Shutt. To this union three children were born: Paul Douglas, Charles Samuel and Virginia Lee.

As Paul and Faye started their married life, they also started their Christian life, and always looked to the Lord for guidance and support.

Paul served three years in World War II in the Quartermaster Depot, serving 29 months in the CBI area training pack animals to carry supplies to the service men in the mountains of India. On returning home, he and his family made their home in Grandview, Mo., where Paul served as a Cub Scout Leader and a Boy Scout Scoutmaster while working as a cabinet maker and carpenter. After they moved to the Schell City area in 1958, where they farmed, they continued their work helping kids through their involvement as leaders in 4-H. After Paul's retirement from farming, he often helped other farmers as an extra hand.

Paul was an active member in each of the area Christian Churches they attended over the years, most recently serving as a member and deacon in the Roscoe Christian Church, where he faithfully attended until his health failed. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 233, El Dorado Springs, and served as Post Commander from 1992-1996.

Survivors include his wife of the home, Faye; three children, Paul Douglas Palmer and his wife, Dorothy, of Schell City, Charles Samuel Palmer and his wife, Cheryl, of Rawlins, Wyo., and Virginia Lee Huegel and her husband, Ralph of Portales, N.M.; five grandchildren, Lola Faye Palmer Miller, Independence, Mo., Devon Palmer and Chad Palmer, Rawlins, Wyo., Rachel Huegel, Phoenix, Ariz., and Jacob Huegel, serving with the U.S. military near Washington, D.C.; and one sister-in-law, Addie Allison of Canon City, Colo.; and two brothers-in-law, Bill Shutt of Iconium, Mo., and Clyde Shutt of Columbus, Kan. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and three sisters.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 24, at the Roscoe Christian Church with Pastor Larry Young officiating. Musical selections will be provided by Lyle and Aleathea Daulton. Burial will follow in Schell City's Green Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post 223 building fund in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home, Schell City.
