Harold Mason Chitty

Harold Mason Chitty, 80, died Jan. 21, 2005, at the Appleton City Manor where he had made his home for the past three and one-half years. He was born May 8, 1924, in Bates County, Mo., to Ovis Benton and Minnie Blanche (Baker) Chitty. He married Feb. 9, 1952, Grace Goble in Warrensburg, Mo.

He graduated from Ballard High School in 1942. After graduation he worked for a time before entering the U.S. Army in 1946. His service included a tour of duty in China. He was honorably discharged in January 1949. He then entered Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, where he studied business for two years. He lived in Kansas City, Mo., where he worked for BMA Insurance, Safeway Stores, and Remington Arms, Lake City until his retirement in 1985. He was baptized and a member of the Besonia Baptist Church. In Schell City he owned the Schell Osage Cycle Center and Used Cars until 2001.

Survivors include his brother, James B. Chitty, Wichita, Kan.; sister Dixie Underwood, Butler; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George and Don; and his wife Gracie.

Funeral services for Harold Mason Chitty were held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Schell City Christian Church in Schell City with Gene Gray officiating. Musical selections were provided by Madalyn Crocker. Pallbearers were Sam Richardson, Kenny Prough, Jerry Thomas, Kenny Hallam, B.J. Doolin and Larry Harms. Honorary pallbearers were Kathy Richardson, Jackie McCammon, Karen Doolin, Teri Thomas, Glenn Hodge, Carolyn Hodge, Arthur E. Sage, David Maus, Judy Rule, Sam Vantellman, Steve Underwood, Frauk Benton Underwood, Georgia Mae Wood, Kit Corum, Orval Moore and Carolyn Caywood. Interment with military honors was held at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Schell City. Memorials are suggested to the Schell City Community Building Perpetual Fund. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
