Alvin Russell Cain, MD, 85, of Lamar, died Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, Lamar.

He was born in Fowler, Kan., on Feb. 19, 1920.

He received his R.N. from Newman Memorial County Hospital in Emporia, Kansas, his bachelor of science from College of Emporia and M.D. from University of Kansas in Lawrence. He had a family practice in Greenfield, Mo., for more than two years. He then moved to Lamar where he practiced for more than 50 years and was a member of the Barton County Memorial Hospital Medical Staff. He retired on Dec. 31, 1999. He served in the U.S. Army during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the Lamar United Methodist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Lamar Rotary Club for more than 50 years and served as a past president. He also served on the Barton County State Bank Board of Directors and was a member of the Lamar, R-1 School Board for 13 years. He was a Lamar Country Club member and past chairman of the board. He was also an avid Civil War historian.

He is survived by his wife, Trula Cain; three daughters, Cheryl Alderson, Sunrise Beach, Mo., Marilyn Selvey, Lamar, and Karen Simmons, Lamar; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and William Cain; a brother, Dr. Ivan Cain; two sisters, Charlotte Baird and Eleanor Canning; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, July 14, at the Lamar United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Daniel Funeral Home, Wednesday, July 13, from 6-8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Lamar United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Lamar Independent Foundation for Education (L.I.F.E.).
