Vern Erwin Spencer

Vern Erwin Spencer, 90, Nevada, Mo., passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at his residence following an illness of several weeks. He was born July 15, 1916, in Ringgold, Neb., to John Francis Spencer Jr. and Bertha Susan Brown Spencer. He was married Nov. 7, 1945, to Majorie Jean Baker and she survives of the home.

Mr. Spencer was born in Nebraska and came to this area in 1929. Vern served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. Following the service, Vern worked 17 years for Greenbrier Apartments in Overland Park, Kan. He worked the remainder of his life as a general contractor, well versed in all areas of the construction business. Vern was saved and baptized at age 12 and was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Nevada.

In addition to his wife Marjorie, survivors include three children, Vern Eugene Spencer, Nevada, Melba Jo Hogan, Nevada, and John James Spencer, Sheldon, Mo.; six grandchildren, Michael Eugene Spencer, Bronaugh, Mo., Diana Lea Miranda, Sheldon, Robert Erwin Spencer, Sheldon, Amanda Jean Portwood, Nevada, Ronnie Wayne Spencer, Lawrence, Kan., and Jennifer Householder, Nevada; and 15 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Leona and Vera; one granddaughter, Tammy Sue Spencer; and one great-granddaughter, Amy Madison Spencer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 22, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. Melvin Mabra officiating. Interment will follow in Click Cemetery in Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday evening between 7-8.

The family suggests that memorials may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
