Alice E. Roberts

Alice E. Roberts, 86, of Butler, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at the Bates County Memorial Hospital. Alice was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Vernon County, Mo., to Henry and Ada (Mowry) Clark. On Feb. 8, 1942, she was united in marriage to Gerald Kenneth Roberts. To this union two sons and two daughters were born.

During World War II Alice worked for Key Clothing Co. She later helped her husband in farming in Vernon County. She was also a supervisor for many years at Nelly Don Dress Factory prior to moving to Butler in 1962. From 1962 until 1977 she owned and operated Alice's Café, with her husband Gerald, where she became quite famous for her homemade bread and delicious pies. From 1977 until 1981 the also owned and operated Alice's Dairy Bar.

Alice loved her family. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. She loved having the family all get together for formal dinners or just everyone stopping by her house for Saturday morning coffee. She enjoyed going to the beauty shop weekly to visit with the girls. She was a member of the Sylvandale Baptist Church near Nevada.

Survivors include her two sons: Gary Roberts and wife Mickey, Randy Roberts and wife Carol; daughter, Nancy Wilhelmson and husband Larry, all of Butler; four sisters, Hazel Leonard, Nevada, Maggie Ranz, Chanute, Kan., Vera Leonard, Kansas City, Kan., and Rosemary Null, Raytown, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Jenny Clark of Everett, Mass.; four grandchildren, Deena McGuire and husband Lyle, Jason Roberts and wife Amber, Tonja Roberts, and Danielle Rolph and husband Jared; five great-grandchildren, Courtney McGuire, Tanner McGuire, Casey Roberts, Jadan Rolph, and Jakaila Rolph; and three step-great-grandchildren, Cody McGuire, Morgan Lamb, and Brian Bermudez.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gerald; her parents; one infant daughter, Meredith Kay Roberts; two sisters, Ruby Barrett and Fern Sumner; and one brother, Bill Clark.

Funeral services were at 1p.m., on Friday, March 9, at the Underwood-Brandtonies Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Butler Senior Center.
