Comets split matches
The Cottey College volleyball team had some mixed reviews from its home-opening matches over the weekend.
Labette Community College, out of Parsons, Kan., defeated the Comets in a four-game match, 30-25, 30-17, 23-30 and 30-28.
Against Fort Scott, the Comets bounced back to sweep the Lady Greyhounds, 30-24, 30-22 and 30-18.
At the outset of the Labette match, Cottey started strong then went into a funk.
"We started off with a great lead, and then went to cruise level," Cottey head coach Marla Kannady Foreman said. "This gave Labette the fuel they needed to make a strong come back from being eight points down to take the first game."
Labette seemed to be energized from the opening-game win, according to Kannady.
"The momentum shift stayed with Labette this whole game, and we were making many unforced errors in the serve receive and hitting areas," she said.
Cottey won the third game, 30-23, with Kannady taking a shot at her charges.
"With a little in-between-game talk, the players decided to throw out the freshmen antics, and started playing ball," Kannady Foreman said. "This was more like what I was used to seeing from my players, and I was convinced at that point, we still had the chance to take it in five."
In the fourth game, down 29-28, Cottey held serve, but lost the rally point and the Lady Cardinals prevailed, 30-28.
"A hard fight to come back, but just one too many errors more than Labette was making," Kannady Foreman said.
Comets sweep Fort Scott
Losing to Labette didn't sit well with the Comets.
"I talked to my players after the loss to Labette, and told them we have had more of a win record over them for several years. We lost both matches to them in 2002, and lost one of our matches to them in 2004.
"To add to the hurt, I told them that they had just handed Labette their first win of the season. It was obvious that they took what I said to heart, as they came out and soundly beat Fort Scott in the first game."
In game two, Cottey won 30-22.
"They continued to dominate the Ft. Scott team, with sound serve receive passes and striking kills by both outside hitters and middle hitter," Kannady said. "It's as if a completely different team had taken the floor."
The Comets finished off Fort Scott with a 30-18 win in the third game.
"The final blow to Fort Scott came when they had a knee injury in the middle of Game 3, causing some rotation changes.
"My players were really on a roll by that point, so they finished with a strong victory for the day."
Nevada High School products Kaitlin Holland and Ashleigh Bryson are members of Fort Scott's team.
