Donald Lee Weakley died March 29, 2009, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada. He was born in Nevada, June 16, 1928, to Glenn and Grace Burris Weakley. He attended Nevada schools, graduating from Nevada High School in 1946. He then attended Central Methodist College. Mr. Weakley served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in the Data Operations Center in Japan.

On May 7, 1961, he married Barbara Jean Turner in Mountain Grove, Mo., and she survives of the home.

He has been a member of the Nevada United Methodist Church since his youth. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and received his 55-year membership pin recently. He was active in civic clubs, and started a Kiwanis Club here. Don served on the City Council, the Ambulance Board, and the Nevada Housing Board.

Mr. Weakley worked for several years for the Missouri Division of Employment Security in Nevada and in Joplin. During the '60s, he owned and operated Don's Gun Shop on West Cherry Street. He later decided on the real estate business, working first as a sales agent for Haggan's Real Estate. He opened his own business, Weakley Real Estate in 1970, which he operated until early 2006.

Donald was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, and quail hunting. He sponsored T-Ball and Pony League teams for several years for the summer sports program and was one of the driving forces behind the establishing of a boys' baseball program at Nevada High School.

He is survived by his wife; his son, Thomas Glenn Weakley and his wife Rachel, and granddaughter, Kaylee Jean, all of Lowell, Ark.; his sister, Della Mae Gordon and her husband Don, of Nevada; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, at the United Methodist Church in Nevada with the Rev. Ralph Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield. Services are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. The casket will remain closed throughout the services.

Friends may call from now and until noon on Wednesday at Ferry Funeral Home, 301 S. Washington, Nevada.
