Mary Agnes (Doss) Ellis

Mary Agnes (Doss) Ellis, age 92, of Schell City, the daughter of Charles L. and Mabel F. (Gray) Doss, was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Windsor, Mo., and passed from this life on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Community Springs Healthcare Center in El Dorado Springs.

Mary grew up in Calhoun, Mo., and moved to this area as a young child. She graduated from Schell City High School in 1936, then taught for two years at the Roberts School. On April 15, 1945, she was united in marriage to Lester W. Ellis in Fort Scott, and to their union one son was born. She and Lester lived the remainder of their lives here where they were engaged in farming and raising cattle. Lester preceded her in death on March 17, 1988.

Mary was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church near Taberville, Mo., where her membership still remains. She was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary of El Dorado Springs, and was actively involved in 4-H for many years.

Mary is survived by her son Charles Leslie Elks and his wife Cheryl of Schell City; two granddaughters, Lesley Beisley and her husband Russell, of Nevada, and Tracy Harms and her husband Randy, of Harwood; six great-granddaughters, Tiffany, Sharleen, and Chanci Beisley; and Ashley, Tammy, and Katy Harms; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann Fox and her husband Ralph, of Higginsville, Mo.; two nieces, Janice Stark of El Dorado Springs, and Carol Ann Russell, of Higginsville; two nephews, Charles Prough, of El Dorado Springs, and Charles Fox, of Warrensburg; other relatives, and many friends. Aside from her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Helen Prough.

Funeral services for Mary Agnes (Doss) Ellis were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, at the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City, with Mark Harvey officiating. Musical selections were provided by David Souza and Kelly Davis. Interment was in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Walker. Pallbearers were Charles Prough, Dale Stark, Russell Beisley, Charles Fox, Randy Harms, and David Russell. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Dade, Terry McKinney, Tim Haner, Walter Hutchison, and Russell Morerod. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Schell City Alumni Association or the Schell City Volunteer Fire Department in care of the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements for Mary Agnes (Doss) Ellis were entrusted to the Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
