Juanita Armstrong

Juanita Armstrong, 91, of Fort Scott and a former Hepler and Girard resident, died at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott where she had entered on Monday.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1919, at Parsons to Walter and Lucy (Powell) Palmer. She grew up and attended schools at rural Hepler and graduated from Hepler Rural High School in 1936.

She and Warren Armstrong were married on April 28, 1937, at rural Helper. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1997.

They resided in the Hepler area until moving to Girard in 1969. She had been living at the Presbyterian Village in Fort Scott since June of 2003. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Girard and a former member of the Hepler Christian Church for many years, a member of the O.E.S. Hiattville Chapter, a past member of the Order of the White Shrine of Fort Scott, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Hepler.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and working with flowers and plants. She was always interested in following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities and will be greatly missed by all of them.

Her survivors include, one son, Ken Armstrong, and his wife, Sharon of Bartlesville, Okla.; her daughter-in-law, Jean Armstrong of Fort Scott; four grandchildren, Mike Armstrong, and his wife, Gina of Springdale, Ark., David Armstrong, and his wife, Velva of Washington, Mo., Julie Thomas, and her husband, Tom of Pittsburg, and Jennifer Nider, and her husband, Jim of Wamego, Kan.; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and five nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Tom Armstrong, on March 11, 1994, and a brother, the Rev. Tom Palmer.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 16, at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home with her grandsons, Mike and David Armstrong, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hepler Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8 Monday.
