Shelby Jean (Grant) Comstock, age 72, of Moran, Kan., died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola.

Miss Shelby was born on Dec. 23, 1937, in Pontotoc County, Miss., to William Herman Grant and Cannie Catherine Little Grant. She was married to Raymond W. Comstock on Sept. 24, 1960. Together they loved and reared eight children.

Shelby held several different jobs in her lifetime including working for Tyson when it was located in Iola, and working at local nursing homes. However, her biggest and favorite job was taking care of her family. In her youth she enjoyed playing basketball and fishing. She carried her love for fishing with her throughout her life. She later discovered that she was a big fan of BINGO. Her favorite vacation spot was the homes of family. She was a feisty lady who loved to joke and flirt. She was a talker and never met a stranger. She had an infatuation with the color red and therefore married a redhead. Her passion was for soap operas and roses. Her family was her life and she was completely devoted to her husband.

Survivors include her children, Patricia "Darnell" Derrick and husband Ricky, Ripley, Miss., Raymond "JR" Comstock and wife Melanie, Holton, Kan., Jeffrey Comstock and wife Tami, Humboldt, Kan., Anna Smith and husband Joe, Clinton, Mo., James Comstock, Ripley, Miss., Robert Comstock and Julie, Holton, Kan., Doris Decker and husband Robert, Bronson, Kan., Cathy Barrera and husband Obed, Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Neal Grant; and brother-in-law, Earl Comstock. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, granddaughter Mary Derrick, sister Marie Grant, brother Curtis Grant, sister Estelle Riddle, Brother J.W. Grant, sister Susie Owens, brother Tom Grant, brother Nade Grant, brother Jr. Grant, seven sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.

Pastor Jeff Feagins will conduct funeral services for Shelby Comstock at 10:30 Monday, March 29, in the Cheney Witt Bronson Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bronson Cemetery.
