Michael Lee "Woody" Wood, 59, Nevada, passed away on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at his home. Michael was born Oct. 8, 1951, in Wichita, Kan. His parents were Hazel Rose Greenway and C.A. "Claud" Wood, Walker, Mo.

Michael graduated from Walker High School, after which he joined the United States Navy, and served aboard the USS Flying Fish. After the Navy, he attended Southwest Missouri State University, where he received bachelors and masters degrees.

He was a basketball player, a cross-country runner, a drag-racer, a photographer, a mechanic, a sailor, an amateur scientist, a computer guy, a fisherman, a friend and a father.

He is survived by his son, Michael Sebastian Wood, Nevada, and his brother Dave Anderson Wood, Joplin, Mo. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Richard Dee Wood.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m., at the American Legion in Nevada. A private committal service will be held at the National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan., at a later date.
