Dorotha Ethel Brown, 93, of rural Nevada, Mo., passed away on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Christian Health Care in Nevada. She was born July 6, 1917, in Texas County, Okla., to Ernest and Vena Sperry. When she was a year old, her parents moved to a farm in Beaver County, also in the Oklahoma Panhandle, where her five siblings Mary, Helen, George, Calvin and Betty were born.

Dorotha married Sid Brown on Jan. 31, 1936, in Woodward, Okla. The couple bought a farm near Catesby and later purchased the Phillip's Petroleum Gas Station in Follett, Texas. In 1948, they moved to Missouri and bought an apartment house in Nevada, selling it in 1950 for a farm northeast of town. Dorotha and Sid became members of the Calvary Baptist Church and attended the Berea Christian Church after their move to the country. A nurse's aide at Nevada City Hospital from 1957-'78, Dorothy returned to hospital service after the death of her husband to volunteer as a Pink Lady for several years.

She is survived by one sister, Betty Steinmetz, Joliet, Mont.; one sister-in-law, Josephine Sperry, Stroud, Okla.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 7, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with the Rev. David Rorabaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
