Floyd Augustus Werst

Floyd Augustus Werst, 73, Nevada, passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2011, at his home in Nevada. Floyd was born Feb. 1, 1938, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., to Warren Werst and Lillian Clemenson Werst.

Floyd grew up in Nevada and attended Nevada High School where he played football and was given the nickname "Tank." Floyd worked at an early age delivering the Kansas City Star. He also worked at the ice plant delivering blocks of ice to help build his muscles for football. Floyd later attended Fort Scott Community College and SMSU, where he played football and majored in business. Floyd held many jobs in the grocery store business. Later he managed grocery stores in Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri. He designed the layout of the Village Market grocery store in Nevada and was assistant manager there. Floyd later worked at Sears and then Crane Plumbing, where he retired in 2006. Floyd loved children. Floyd coached little league football for several years and enjoyed watching his former players athletic abilities develop. Floyd's passion was horses. He was never without one. Floyd was a member of the Governor's Mounted Guard where he rode in parades with the Governor and did search and rescue missions on horseback. He was a founding member of the Wranglers Horse Club in Nevada.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Sherrick Werst; two children, Lisa Werst Nicewaner and husband, Sean, of Liberty, Mo., and Shawn Werst, of Springfield, Mo.; two grandchildren, Paige Nicewaner and Gavon Werst; and two sisters, Marcelene Bruns of Nevada, and Delores Huffman of Renton, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Lillian; three brothers, Everett, Kenneth and John Werst; and two sisters, Naomi Ochs and Juanita McCellan.

Floyd was a dedicated and loving husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle and friend.

Per his request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. The family will hold a private service at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

In the words of Floyd, "Goodbye, good luck, and may the good Lord take a liking to you!"
