Nevada Tigers win four matches by pin against Webb City

WEBB CITY, Mo. -- The Webb City Cardinals and the Clinton Cardinals entered Thursday night's wrestling triangular at Webb City High School with revenge on their minds and that was exactly what they got as head coach Devin White's squad lost both duals despite strong performances by several of Nevada's wrestlers.

"(We) had some kids banged up and sick," White said. "Opens killed us again, but (I'm) very proud of the ones that wrestled. Looking at the matches we had, we wrestled well."

Last year, the Tigers beat both Webb City and Clinton, but thanks to open weight classes, fell short in both duals. Webb City beat Nevada, 48-24, while Clinton earned a 45-42 victory.

Against Clinton, the Tigers won five of the six matches that were wrestled. Of those five matches, all of the Tigers' victories came by pin and the one loss was the deciding factor in the dual since it went Clinton's way by decision, giving the Cardinals the three team points by which they won.

Things went a little differently against Webb City as the Tigers gave up the same 30 points as they did to Clinton through open weight classes. The Tigers still won four matches by pin, but Webb City was able to ride the momentum of six forfeits, one pin and two decision victories to take the victory by 24 team points.

The biggest bright spots of the day were Dayton Miller at 106 pounds, Daxtyn Osburn at 138 and Colby Smith at 220 as they each beat both of their opponents by pin. The Tigers' other perennial top performer, Slade Stiles, picked up one victory by pin and another by forfeit,

Next on the schedule for the Tigers is Saturday, Jan. 5, when they take back to the road for the Monett Invitational tournament.
