Wallace Powell, 90, of Fort Scott, died at his home Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012.

He was born July 22, 1922, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Wallace Eugene and Laura Lee (McGargar) Powell Sr. He married Norma Jeane Barnett March 1, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo. She preceded him in death, Aug. 26, 2004.

Wallace served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a lifetime member of the PGA, having been a professional golfer for most of his life until retirement.

In his younger days, Wally could frequently be found on the golf course, enjoying the game he loved, and often would impart his knowledge to his fellow golfers. Wally was a fan of classic "Rat Pack" songs, and especially enjoyed hearing the tunes of singers such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

He was an avid sports fan and especially loved professional sports teams in Kansas City; the Royals and Chiefs. He also very much enjoyed watching the University of Kansas Jayhawks basketball team.

Wally also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spent each morning in recent years watching morning cartoons with two of his great-granddaughters. Throughout his life, he always liked being with family and taking family trips.

Wally is survived by his daughter, Leesa Silvers, and great-granddaughters, Kenli Coleman and Kaeda Stufflebeam of the home; grandchildren Jason and Amy Silvers, Shannon Greenfield, Kevin and Jennifer Addington, and Kasee Coleman, all of Fort Scott; and great-grandchildren Kaleigh Armstrong, Connor Bruce, Gage and Britni Addington, and Brady Silvers.

In addition to his wife, Norma Jeane, Wally was preceded in death by his son, Larry Powell; two brothers, Claude Roscoe Powell and Robert Eugene Powell; and a grandson, Danny Alan Silvers Jr.

Following cremation, William James Schafer will conduct memorial services for Wally at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m., prior to the service.

Interment will be held at a later date at the Fort Scott National Cemetery under the direction of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
