Joleen Dorothy Carter, 69, Nevada, Mo., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Nevada Regional Medical Center, following a sudden illness. She was born Aug. 25, 1943, in Winterset, Iowa, to John F. and Lavera Wiegel. She married Lewis George Carter Sr. on Oct. 22, 1970, in El Dorado Springs, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2012.

Joleen came to Vernon County with her family at a young age. She attended the Stoneyfront School near Milo and Nevada schools, graduating from Nevada High School in 1961. Joleen lived in Nebraska for many years and came back to Harwood in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis George Carter Jr. and his girlfriend, Tracy, Bronaugh, Mo., and Ricky Carter and his wife, Sheryl, Nevada; four grandchildren, Tyler Minor, Johnathan Carter, Tabatha Carter, and Mathew Carter-Minor; four brothers, Ronald Wiegel, El Dorado Springs, John Wiegel, Dederick, Richard Wiegel, St. Louis, and Randy Wiegel, Harwood, Mo.; two sisters, Linda Carpenter, El Dorado Springs, and Anita Amick, Dederick. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Sr.; her parents; one sister, Faylene Shepherd; and two sons, Mathew Carter and John Carter.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with Rev. Chad Bailey officiating. Interment will follow in Lefler Cemetery, near Dederick, Mo. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends from 7-8 p.m., today, Jan. 22, at the funeral home.
