The Nevada R-5 board of education approved its budget for the 2005-'06 school year that is in balance -- good news to school officials after last year's budget, which was expected to result in a $1.3 million deficit. The district had expected a shortfall due to the state's budget woes, that meant the school funding formula in place at the time was underfunded, with smaller amounts given to local schools than they would have gotten had that formula been fully funded...

Special exhibit highlights era of Osage history

A special traveling exhibit is now on display at the Bushwhacker Museum, "Breaking Up The Land: Photographs of the Osage after Allotment." In 1999, the Osage Tribal Museum, Pahuska, Okla., began collecting photographs of the 2,229 "allottees" of 1906. These were the officially recognized tribal members at the time the federal government allotted, or divided up the tribe's assets, among individuals...

What did your mother do with her trash? I asked my Ozark-reared husband that question one day and he had a laughing fit. His mother didn't ever have any trash. He said she used everything but the squeal of the pig. Commercial cans, which make a good portion of our trash today (to go to the recycling center), were unheard of. ...

Some of you may be surprised to know that Elvis and I share some of the same food favorites. Sort of. The King was fond of peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches. At least that's what my wife and I learned several years ago during a tour of Graceland. I've never eaten a peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich, not even after I got the recipe from the Graceland kitchen staff...

WICHITA, Kan. -- Despite leading for most of the game and coming within one strike of winning twice, the Nevada Griffons lost their loser's bracket game to the Park City (Kan.) Cowboys at the National Baseball Congress Wednesday, 7-4 in 10 innings.
