Charles V. "Chuck" Acklin, 56, a longtime Parsons businessman, died at 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at his home. He was born March 31, 1952, in Evergreen Park, Ill., to Bill and Annabelle (Weber) Acklin. He grew up in the Chicago area, and as a young teenager, moved with his family to Nevada, where he graduated from high school in 1970. Oct. 8 An accident occurred at 6:45 a.m., on Centennial and CRD 1700, involving a car driven by Jennifer M. Hopkins, of El Dorado Springs. Hopkins state she noticed a car stopped in front of her, applied her breaks and slid on the wet pavement and into the ditch on the south side of the highway...

The Nevada Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams took on Lamar Tuesday night with marked success. The seventh grade A and B teams traveled to Lamar for their match and both teams needed three sets to pull off the victory, were still able to come out on top. The B team lost their first set 19-25, but were able to come back and take the match by winning the last two sets 25-10, 25-20...

The Nevada Lady Tigers volleyball team suffered a close loss at Ash Grove Tuesday night. In set one, Taylor Means opened for the Lady Tigers by serving five consecutive points, but Ash Grove came back to take the lead near the end and went on to take the set 25-23. "We got off to a great start," head coach Becky Lowery said. "Then we let them come back and stay real close the rest of the game until they went ahead at the end."...

The Cottey College Comets suffered their fifth loss of the season as they fell in three sets to the seventh-ranked Longview Community College Lakers. The Lakers got on the board first in the opening set, but the Comets were able to stay close through the beginning portion of the set until a serve that didn't make it over the net started a 3-0 Longview run that put the score at 13-10. another quick 3-0 run extended the lead to 16-11 and the Comets were never able to come back...

The Nevada High School is about to induct two new members to its Wall of Fame. Jack Nelson is a Nevada High School graduate from the class of 1957. While in high school at Nevada, Nelson was a two-time state competitor in the one-mile run with a Missouri state title in 1957, as well as taking second in Cross Country and the one-mile run in 1956...
