Harold Franklin Carpenter, 94, Nevada, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the Barone Alzheimer's Care Center in Nevada following a brief illness. Harold was born on Sept. 10, 1914, in Oskaloosa, Kan., to Harry Lloyd Carpenter and Jessie Marcella Carpenter. He married Ollie Maurine Smith on Dec. 23, 1939, in Nevada, and she preceded him in death in 1991...

September brought with it more hurricanes in the southern United States, and area guardsmen with Company, A, 311th Brigade Support Battalion headed to Louisiana to help with relief from Hurricane Gustav. October saw Nevada lose out on having five group homes located inside Nevada due to the objections from local residents. After the objections were raised, Community Support Services, Joplin, decided to withdraw their request for the city to change its regulations to allow the group homes to be located closer together than the one mile spacing called for in the city code...
