A man accused of rape and sodomy turned himself in to the Vernon County Sheriff's Office on Thursday and was booked into the Vernon County Jail. Nicomu Lee Ling is charged with five felony charges alleging statutory rape and statutory sodomy. He was arraigned before Associate Circuit Judge Neal Quitno on Friday on three charges of second-degree statutory rape and two counts of second-degree statutory sodomy. All five are Class C felonies...

Music on the Square is gearing up for its 2013 season, which will begin April 18. The committee has decided to move the event from Monday evenings to Thursday, except July 4. Since Independence Day falls on a Thursday this year, the event will be canceled for that night...

Vernon County Sheriff's Office deputies were all set to make a raid on a house in Nevada on Monday evening, when their plans unexpectedly changed. Deputies expected to arrest five people at the house, but ended up taking three of them into custody during two traffic stops in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Super Center in Nevada. The raid on a house at 502 S. West St. followed later in the evening with one arrest...

The Nevada Children's Center is looking for a new home. To members of the center's board, the Children's Center is a place, but to the children, it's also much more. Children's Center provides a process used for assessment and treatment of child abuse -- a place where evidence can be gathered to prosecute those who dare to hurt a child, but it is done in such a way as to lessen each child's pain and fear, and "get the child quickly on the road to healing" according to a news release provided by the board of directors.. ...

EL DORADO SPRINGS -- The El Dorado Christian High School track team began its season on April 4, at Adrian High School. This year was the first time the El Dorado Christian team had participated in the annual meet. Due to a scheduling conflict with another spring sport, the Buffalos were only able to take 11 athletes to the event, but all 11 of those athletes were ultimately able to bring home medals -- four gold, five silver and two bronze...

SHELDON -- The Panthers and Lady Panthers track and field team at Sheldon High School has officially gotten its 2013 campaign under way. In the first meet of the season on April 4, in Stockton, Mo., Kasey Jones placed first in the mile and second in the 2-mile run. WALKER -- The Northeast Vernon County High School baseball team has had its share of rainouts this year, just like every other spring sports team around Vernon County, but has been able to play a few dates, in spite of things. The Nevada Tigers baseball team has seen a number of changes to its schedule throughout the course of the still-young 2013 season and that trend has continued once again. The Tigers are still scheduled to face Seneca today and Pittsburg tomorrow, weather and field conditions permitting, but Nevada High School athletic director Kevin McKinley announced in two separate emails Wednesday and Thursday that the times for both of those games have been changed. ...
