The threat of rain was not the only reason the Nevada High School baseball team kept the pedal to the metal against East Newton Tuesday at Lyons Stadium. The Tigers also wanted to prove a point to their conference foe and future district opponent. “This was a game that we knew we needed to have from a conference and district perspective, but also just a game where we could test ourselves to not play down to an opponent that has a weaker record,” said NHS head coach Danny Penn, whose squad improved to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in Big 8 West play with a 9-4 win over the Patriots (3-10, 0-6). ...

CARTHAGE — Thanks to a big 89, the Big 8 belongs to Nevada High School. Having a pair of 88s and the conference-best round of 70 doesn’t hurt, either. “I don’t know how to explain it. Just a shocker. Vernon County Commission reminds community of tire collection event

The Vernon County Commissionwould like to remind the community that the county is partnering with Region M to offer a discounted tire collection event this weekend. The event — to be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Vernon County Fairgrounds (1488 E. Ashland St.), Sunday, May 2 — will include the shredding of tires and having metal threads removed.
