New library technology assists with genealogical research

Friday, September 5, 2003

With a matching grant from the Tri-County Genealogical Society, the Library was able to purchase HeritageQuest, the largest genealogical data provider in the United States, for the computers. HeritageQuest provides a unique and continuously expanding collection of research materials to help patrons trace their family lineage and American culture. It is designed specifically for libraries. Beginning with more than 25,000 family and local histories, HeritageQuest Online is growing to include the complete U.S. Federal Census from 1790-1930, the Revolutionary War Pension Applications, and Bounty Land Warrant Applications, obituaries from more than 150 newspapers across America, and the Freedman's Bank Records. "We looked at several online genealogical programs, and HeritageQuest was the best bang for the buck," McBeth said. "Patrons will get a clean and simple interface designed specifically for the library. They will be able to search and review results quickly."
