Sunday, July 13, 2003

The Vernon County University Outreach and Extension Center will be hosting three informational meetings concerning the proposed Vernon County Public Safety and Enhanced 911 Emergency Communications Center. According to a release from county officials, current county resources and a proposed one-half cent countywide sales tax would fund the public safety center, and within 15 years, the tax would be reduced to three-eighth cent. County voters will be able to vote on the issue on Tuesday, Aug. 5. The informational meetings will be held in three locations, giving access to county residents to learn more about the proposal. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at the Northeast Vernon County elementary school gymnasium, Schell City, beginning at 7 p.m. The second meeting will be held Thursday, July 24, at the Sheldon school gymnasium, beginning at 7 p.m. The third and final meeting will be held July 31, at the Home Economics Building, Centennial Park and Fairgrounds, Nevada, starting at 7 p.m. A short video discussing county jail and communication issues will be shown followed by a question and answer session featuring the Vernon County Commissioners, Sheriff and the project architect. For more information about the meetings, contact the Vernon County Outreach and Extension Center, (417) 448-2560.
