Old -time craft show coming to Nevada

Sunday, October 19, 2003

Members of Nevada Impact Tourism Committee are gearing up for a fall festival of genuine old-time crafters, set for next weekend. On Saturday, a host of rug weavers, spinners and wool crafters, broom makers, candle makers and other old-but-not-forgotten crafts will be setting up demonstrations and wares for sale at Candle Creek, on North Osage in Nevada. More than 30 crafters will be bringing, "All kinds of things. It'll be strictly people with old time crafts, and they'll be making them on the spot. We're also going to have food, live music -- it'll be a lot of fun," said Mike Conway of Candle Creek. Conway said the tourism committee sees the event as a living history affair rather than a craft fair -- that's on reason the crafters are making their wares on-site. "There'll be people from all over. We've got crafters coming from Oklahoma, Kansas, Tennessee. We're not charging them anything to have the booth. It's something we're doing to try to promote tourism in Nevada more," Conway said. So, on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Candle Creek will become a showcase for old time crafters. It's late in the season, Conway admits -- but the date was carefully chosen as one when most of the crafters would not already be booked, especially since this is the first time Candle Creek has hosted the event they hope will become an annual tradition. "It was a good open date. Most outdoor craft shows are over by now. It gave us a lot more freedom, and some of these people book a year in advance," Conway said. Crafters may still be accepted for the event; however, Conway stressed that items must be hand crafted. "No store-bought items, or anything like that," he said. There's no admission charge for guests, and Conway said it'll be a fun day with plenty of food available many demonstrations for guests' enjoyment. For more information, call (417) 667-2267.
