Getting ready for a hauntingly good time

Thursday, October 2, 2003

Nevada Parks and Recreation Department director Carol Branham looks around the empty concrete-floored room and beams. "This will be where they come in. We'll have a staging area here and then they'll start down there," she says, pointing. Like any general marshaling forces for battle Branham has a plan and works it. She has two watchwords for action; safety and fun. "Safety is very important. We've already had the fire department down to check out the sprinklers and look over the facility and they don't have any problems." The focus of all the activity is the haunted house the parks department is preparing for occupation in the old Key building on East Cherry. "We've got a lot of partners this year and they will be coming in and getting their preparations going soon. It should be a lot of fun for the kids. All of the city departments are participating; we've got the water department, the police, the fire department, the street department, city hall and, of course, parks and recreation. We've got people from the ambulance district, Cottey students, Wilkinson's and Wal-Mart helping out." The haunted house will be open Oct. 17 and 18 and from Oct. 24 through Nov. 1. "Craig (city manager Craig Hubler) thought having it open the weekend of the 17th and 18th would be a good idea because we're going to have the Manufacturers Appreciation Golf Tournament in the city at that time and it would be good public relations." Branham said anyone interested in lending a hand can contact her at city hall or by calling (417) 448-2700.
