The Nevada Daily Mail and Herald were honored with four awards from the Missouri Press Association during the organization's annual convention on Saturday. The Nevada Daily Mail was awarded first place in General Excellence for Class 1 dailies, or newspapers of comparable circulation to the Daily Mail. The general excellence category is judged on overall aspects of the newspaper, including news content, layout, print quality and general appearance of ads. Judges noted that "enterprise reporting and some fresh ideas set this paper apart." Daily Mail and Herald managing editor Lynn Wade said, "This award recognizes the hard work and commitment of all of the newspaper's staff, from front desk to press room. We also extend special thanks to the community, because this recognition would not be possible without the support and input of the people of Vernon County." The Nevada Daily Mail and Herald were also honored with three awards for photography. Justin Baldwin, Daily Mail and Herald reporter and agricultural editor, won second place for Best News Photograph, Class 1 dailies, for a photo taken in January 2003 of a junkyard fire that consumed about 300 cars. Heavy snow that fell as firefighters battled the inferno was visible in the photo. Judges called Baldwin's photo an "excellent depiction of the interaction of fire and weather." Ralph Pokorny, photographer, won a second place, Best Sports Photograph, Class I weeklies, for the Herald, and an honorable mention, Best Sports Photograph, Class 1 dailies, for the Mail. Both photos depicted a moment of supreme effort and determination on the faces of local competitors. Judges said, "Love the concentration and determination on the competitor's face," and "nice moment and facial expression."
