WILLARD, Mo. -- The Lady Tiger volleyball team got off to a good start, then fizzled. Nevada went 1-2-1 in pool play for a third-place finish. The top two teams in the two five-team pools advanced to the finals of the Lori Endicott Invitational at Willard on Saturday. Nevada (2-3-1), led by Veronica Mosier with 13 points and three aces, won its pool-play opener 25-20, 25-23 over Diamond. Jenny McCullough led with nine kills and Lacy Leonard had two blocks. "We played really well against Diamond and started off on the right foot for the tournament," said Nevada coach Sharla Wilkerson. "We played to our ability and stayed that way the entire match." In the second match, the Tigers lost to host Willard, 18-25 and 21-25. Said Wilkerson, "Willard was the team to beat in our pool and we played pretty well against them. We just couldn't seem to keep the momentum on our side so we started going downhill." McCullough served for five points and was the kill leader with four. Leonard and Mosier added three kills each. Match three saw the Tigers go against Cassville. Nevada lost the first game 20-25, then battled back for a split with a 27-25 victory. "We just couldn't seem to pull ourselves together for either of the last two matches, Cassville and Salem (Ark.)," Wilkerson said. Kelsey Erwin served for seven points and Wendi Jones scored six, including four aces. Hillary Adams and Ashley Beckett led in kills with three each, while Jenny McCullough and Veronica Mosier had two kills and three blocks each against Cassville. Nevada lost a tough 23-25 first game to Salem in its final tournament match, then fell 16-25. "After we lost the first game, we just kind of gave up," said Wilkerson. "We started off so well, I just wish we could have kept it going all day." The Tigers visit McDonald County on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
