JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Shelley Seider's phenomenal performance led Rich Hill to the MSHSAA Class 1 women's track and field championship on Saturday. Rich Hill scored 61 points to runner-up Stanberry's 48 1/2 and third-place finisher Midway's 48. Seider, a junior, never tasted defeat at the state meet held at Lincoln University. She won all four individual events entered -- 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles and the long jump -- including all her preliminary races. She became the tenth woman to win four or more events at a Missouri state meet in a single year. Also contributing to the state title were junior Katrina Schapler, twice-defending state champion who finished second in the pole vault, and sophomore Ashley Entrikin who placed second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. However, it took a record performance to unseat Schapler. Winner Erin Carver of Midway cleared 10-3, tying the Missouri Class 1 record. "I think all three girls had a great meet," said Rich Hill coach Brian Thomas. "Obviously, anytime you can send a kid to state and she wins four events, that's very special. It was an unbelievable year for the girls to win our conference, the district and state." Seider's accomplishments culminated a steady rise to the top. Previously at the state meet, she had won the long jump, finished second in the hurdles and fourth in the sprints as a freshman. As a sophomore, Seider won the hurdles, finished second in the sprints and failed to qualify for the long jump. Said Thomas, "Her failing to qualify (long jump) last year went a long way toward making her mentally tough and determined to do well." On the boys side, all three Rich Hill qualifiers scored. The top eight in each event medal. Senior Tommy Henderson placed sixth in the triple jump and tied for seventh in the high jump. Junior Dallas Jennings finished third in the discus with a throw of 137-10, while senior Chad Heuser took sixth in the shot put. Rich Hill placed 17th in the men's team scoring with 12 3/4 points. Results (times/distances) Women 100 -- 1. Seider, 12.93. 200 -- 1. Seider, 26.4. 300 hurdles -- 1. Seider, 47.65. Long jump -- 1. Seider, 17-3 1/4. Pole vault -- 2. Schapler, 9-6. Discus -- 2.
