JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Nevada Tigers, the bottom seed, took No. 3 Seneca to the wire in a district softball matchup at Missouri Southern University on Saturday. Whitney Smith's solid pitching -- three hits allowed -- and sound defense kept the Tigers hanging around in the 3-0 first-round loss. "I'm proud of the way the girls stepped up their level of play," said Nevada coach Chris Garzone. Scoreless throughout two innings, Seneca, the home team, lit the scoreboard first with a run in the third. Nevada failed to capitalize on a great opportunity in the top of the fourth, it's only viable scoring threat of the contest. Junior Amanda Kitsmiller led off with a single, then sophomore Mallori Adams stroked a one-out single, sending Kitsmiller to third. Adams stole second, but two straight strikeouts ended the threat with no damage. Said Garzone, "We were close, one big hit and who knows what would have happened." Seneca added single insurance runs in the fourth and fifth to secure the victory. Nevada, a third-year program, ended its most productive season with a 4-15 mark. No. 1 Webb City claimed its seventh district crown with a 2-1 win over No. 2 Carl Junction.
