Through a glass darlky 6/27

I've been following the brouhaha over the University of Michigan quota case. Left wing ideologues praise the university for its policy of giving certain minority groups, but not others, special consideration when applying for admittance to that institution. They give 20 points out of a possible 100 if the applicant is African-American or Latino but don't give Asians the same break. A perfect SAT score garners applicants a measly 12 points. One of the most irritating things about this case and about those who try to defend this racist policy is the total lack of compassion on the part of the university and its friends. The Asian ethnic group include more than Japanese, Chinese, and Korean people, those who perform well scholastically and socially. It also includes Vietnamese, Laotians and Indonesians, those who don't do as well as the above-named class of Asians. Those same left-wingers who support this race-based system decry a different program that is no more race-based than it, and misnamed at that, racial profiling. They purposely minimize or deny the ways race can be used as a valid basis for law enforcement agencies to eliminate suspects in investigations. It isn't racial profiling to only look for twenty-something Latinos if a holdup occurs that was perpetrated by twenty-something Latinos. Why look at whites or African Americans as suspects if you know they didn't do it? In the same manner, why strip search little old ladies at airports when everyone is well aware that Middle Eastern people, by far, are the group that have perpetrated the most violence against airlines. It makes sense to spend the most time and resources on investigating the group that poses the greatest danger. Social engineering is fine in classroom debates but when it comes to the welfare of the American people its time to put up or shut up. As for me, I would much rather have a system that protected me and my family over one that made sure we didn't offend a terrorist committed to killing as many Americans as he could before being sent to Paradise with his 72 virgins. In the 1960s the standard reply to complaints about the police was "The next time you need help, call a hippie." I would say today the ones to call would be Alec Baldwin and Hillary Clinton, both of whom support the Michigan case and are opposed to "racial profiling."
