100 Years Ago -- October 14, 1903 Theo Gary, general manager of the Nevada Telephone Company, was here Monday in the interest of his company. Mr. Gary informs the Mail that the Nevada Exchange has completed its connection with the town of Walker. The line is free to Nevada Telephone subscribers when talking to Central to Walker, talking to others with a nominal charge of ten cents for a messenger service. Non-subscribers are charged with a toll of 25 cents. The Nevada Company is constantly improving and extending its lines, which by week, adds importance to its subscribers and others interested in securing quick communications with the people of the town and outlying districts and towns.

75 Years Ago -- October 14, 1928

One of the strongest casts ever selected for a home talent show has been gathered for the American Legion Annual Show at the High School Auditorium on Tuesday and Wednesday 23 and 24. The Lion's Club's Double Quartet forms the backbone of the organization, supported by many of Nevada's best singers, musicians and comedians. SCHOOL NEWS -- Patrons of the Bronaugh Reorganized School District will vote Friday, Oct. 23 on a $173,000 bond issue to construct a new combination grade school, high school and gymnasium auditorium. A spokesman for the district said this morning that the Board of Education planned the election and bond issue because of the dangerously unsatisfactory condition of the present school building in Bronaugh. The spokesperson continued, "that we can get a new building, constructed before this one falls down." The architects plan for the new structure call for fourteen classrooms, eight for the high school and six for the grade school and the gymnasium auditorium. SPORTS -- The World Champion New York Yankees, for the first time in their 51-year-old Major League history, have blacks on their roster today. The Yankees became the 11th big league club to acquire a black player yesterday when they announced the purchase of Vic Power and Elston Howard from their Kansas City farm club of the American Association. The pair, together with six other hopefuls from Kansas City and Birmingham, will join the parent club at the Spring Training Camp in St. Petersburg, Florida, next February.
