Sesquicentennial book deadline approaches

Friday, November 7, 2003

With the steady trickling of time the Vernon County Sesquicentennial draws closer. However, what is approaching at a much quicker pace is the deadline for entries in the Vernon County Sesquicentennial History Book, The deadline's Dec. 1, just a few weeks away.

At Thursday night's meeting Vernon County Sesquicentennial Book Committee co-chair Betty Pitts said that, so far, the Sesquicentennial committee has collected only 286 stories from families, businesses and organizations. They are still needing more submissions and welcome, not only families, but schools, churches, military and clubs to write up their histories and bring them in.

Each story should be around 300 words and be signed by the person submitting it. Pictures should be attached and labeled. There is no charge to submit a story for the sesquicentennial book.

Orders for the books have also been slow in coming. Pitts reports that they have only collected enough money for around 60 books. "We need a lot more but, it's a beginning," said Pitts.

Besides more stories, the Vernon County Sesquicentennial Book Committee needs volunteers. The group is in desperate need for typers and proofreaders. In addition, they have received no stories from Montevallo or Virgil City.
