Hospice tree lets special memories shine

It started out fairly small, as a way for the local home health and hospice to raise a little extra money. However, in the 11 years since the first Hospice Tree of Shining Memories the program has grown considerably and has become a Nevada institution.

According to Linda Schmitz, NRMC Foundation Director, in the beginning the Tree of Shining Memories was only a small tree in the hospital lobby decorated with ornaments purchased for a $10 donation and frequently dedicated to a loved one.

"It was a way for people to remember their loved ones, especially those who maybe had gone through treatment," said Schmitz.

Several years ago the program became so large that the tree had to be moved to the Vernon County Courthouse and donations would buy a light on the tree.

At this time management of the tree was transferred to the Nevada Regional Medical Center Foundation.

"Since we went out on the Square, we now sell over 400. So we have more than quadrupled the numbers," said Schmitz.

However, one thing has remained the same, the dedication of lights to honor loved ones. "I've had people tell me that when this has been done then someone will call them and break down and cry because they were so touched at the fact that someone bought a light in memory of someone close to them," said Schmitz.

All the money raised by the Tree of Shining Memories goes to the NRMC Home Health and Hospice and is one of their few sources of revenue.

The hospice allows people with a terminal illness to receive the last few months of care in a familiar setting, either in their homes or in the homes of friends or family. Typically, clients are those whose prognosis is for a life expectancy of six months or less.

"We are raising this money, from the hospice tree, to support the hospice. One thing is that the hospice turns down no one. As long as they are certified by a doctor, even if they cannot pay, the hospice will give them care," said Schmitz.

This year the lighting of the Tree of Shining Memories will be at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, right before the annual Christmas parade.
