Sunday, December 7, 2003

An ill-fated party in the 2000 block of Spring Street Nov. 29 ended with a law enforcement investigation that escalated into charges against two Nevada men after Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. M.C. Mason and Trooper K.J. Rutledge discovered that while they were investigating, someone slashed a tire on each of the two patrol cars at the scene.

After a four-day investigation, Reed A.Slates, 20, and Zachary J. Fenel, 19, both of Nevada, were charged in connection with the incident. According to a release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Slates and Fenel were each charged with two felony counts of tampering with a motor vehicle and are being held in the Barton County jail. A $10,000 bond is set for each suspect.

Troopers had originally gone to the Spring Street address to investigate a report of minors consuming alcohol. A large quantity of alcohol was confiscated as a result of a related search, and charges are pending against several local teens for possession of alcohol by a minor.
