Tiger grapplers open season with busy week

The Nevada Tiger wrestling team wrapped up a busy week of action with a respectable tournament finish, a dual-match win and two close losses in a triangular meet.

"Right now, we're an inexperienced team with six wrestlers in our lineup with either no varsity or no wrestling experience at any level," said Nevada coach Larron Hurst. "So our goal is to improve early and get better by the first of the year."

Nevada competed at the Pleasant Hill Tournament last Saturday, coming away with a third-place team finish.

Individually, Zach Walrod in the 145-pound division, Tyler Shouse, 189-pound class, and heavyweight Leonard Keller captured first-place medals.

Joe Roberts took second in the 119-pound division, while Tommy Werner was third in the 140-pound class and David Hawks fourth in the 125-pound class.

Leonard Keller, Nevada's state medalist heavyweight, pins Clinton's John Tierney in 12 seconds.

In its home opener on Tuesday, Nevada edged Clinton 39-37 in a dual meet.

With the meet on the line, Werner decisioned his Clinton opponent in the final match of the evening to swing the final score in Nevada's favor.

Then on Thursday, the Tigers were edged in two close matches at the Fort Scott Triangular. Nevada lost by identical 42-40 scores to two Kansas schools, Pittsburg and Fort Scott.
