The Nevada Middle School seventh graders defeated Joplin North 34-22 for a fifth-place finish in the Nevada 7th Grade Basketball Tournament on Thursday.

"I'm very proud of these kids," said Nevada coach Jared Brown. "They've worked hard all three nights since we opened (the season)."

The Tigers, led by Colby Shepherd's 23 points, improved to 2-1. Tyler Gast added eight, while Ben Fisher and Devin Chapman closed out the scoring with two and one, respectively.

John McDermid paced North with nine.

One phase of the Tiger game, in particular, showed room for improvement. The Tigers were able to convert only 4 of 15 free-throw attempts.

"We'll be shooting free throws tomorrow morning at 6 o'clock," promised a smiling Brown.
