Martha Lee Dougherty

Martha Lee Dougherty, 88, Nevada, Mo., passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at Christian Health Care, Nevada, Mo., following a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Fortescue, Mo., the daughter of Lloyd Caleb Smith and Ida May Boyd Smith. She married Thomas Walter Dougherty on March 21, 1936, in Ottawa, Kan. He preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1994.

Martha grew up and attended school in Fortescue and Ottawa, Kan., where she had moved at age 9. She and her husband lived in the Nevada and Walker area until 1948 when they moved back to Ottawa, Kan. In 1952, they moved to Fort Scott, Kan., where they farmed and she was a homemaker. She was a longtime member of the Fort Scott Assembly of God Church and a current member of the Nevada Assembly of God Church. She has lived in Nevada since 1997.

Survivors include one sister, Zepha Dougherty, Nevada, Mo.; one brother, James Leo Smith, Nevada; four nieces, Dianna Hartley, Nevada, Sue Shellhorn, Grain Valley, Mo., Lou Henry, Las Vegas, Nev., and Rosemary Clevenger, Ottawa, Kan.; and two nephews, Jim Smith, Glenpool, Okla., and Vernon Smith, McPherson, Kan. In additiona to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 15, at Newton Burial Park, Nevada, Mo., with the Rev. Doug Evans officiating. Friends may call now and until 10:30 a.m., Thursday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, Mo.
