Auditors to review city records in response to petition drive

Tuesday, January 27, 2004

A group of local citizens have obtained enough signatures to have Missouri State Auditor Claire McCaskill perform an audit of the City of Nevada. Vernon County Clerk Tammi Beach confirmed that the group had enough certified signatures to force the audit.

The group raised 521 signatures of which 472 were verified by the county clerks office. It isn't unusual for a petition to have signatures on it that can't be verified. Sometimes it is simply that the person doesn't live in the political division or they have let their voter registration lapse.

Typically the auditor will hold a public meeting before the audit to inform residents of the scope of the audit and what to expect as well as what not to expect from the process.
