Lawrence "Larry" Dale Shumate

Lawrence "Larry" Dale Shumate, 76, Nevada, Mo., died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Moore-Few Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Milo, Mo., to James Dale Shumate and Edith A. Garrett Shumate. He married Norma Jean Sisney on March 23, 1948, in Bentonville, Ark., and she survives of the home.

Larry was born and raised in Milo. He attended school in Milo and Nevada. He lived in Modesto, Calif., for 45 years. Mr. Shumate worked for Phillips Electric Company for several years in California. He retired in 1972. He came back to Vernon County in 1994. Larry was a member of the Milo Baptist Church since 1944. He was a life member of the Old Fisherman's Club, Modesto, Calif. He was a 34-year member of the Eagles, a two-year past president of the Modesto Eagles and a member of the Nevada Eagles Lodge No. 3770.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Norma, include one son, Marvin Shumate, Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Sandra Tamplen, Klamath Falls, Ore., and Pamela Shumate, Nevada, Mo.; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; one sister, Eva Alice Bray, Modesto, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Shumate in 1960, and one brother, Robert Carl Shumate in 1945.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Ferry Funeral Home with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery, Milo, Mo. Friends may call now and until the hour of service at the funeral home.
