DREXEL, Mo. -- Girls' first-round action of the MSHSAA Class 1, District 12 Tournament tipped off at Drexel, Mo., on Monday.

Of the four Vernon County Conference participants, two stayed alive. Hume eliminated VCC sister Northeast Vernon County, Sheldon topped Miami and Bronaugh exited with a loss to Drexel.

Hume (19-6), the second seed, defeated stubborn No. 7 NEVC 74-54.

NEVC trailed by just one point, 16-15, when Katie Foreman's half-court shot banked in at the first-quarter buzzer.

The Lady Hornets extended the lead to 34-25 at the half, then 53-38 going into the final period.

The Lady Knights cut the margin to 10 at 60-50, with about four minutes to go, before the Lady Hornets revved it up with a 14-4 run to seal the win.

"I was very pleased with how the girls played tonight, considering what had happened before," said NEVC coach Chuck Wolfe, referring to a 60-31 loss to Hume in early February.

Foreman led the Lady Knights with a game-high 29 points, while Randi Carter added 11.

Hume's superior height and quickness translated into a substantial edge in the rebounding and turnover categories.

Said Lady Hornet coach Larry Berry, "We just kept taking it to the hole, using our size and it worked out pretty well for us."

Three Lady Hornets reached double figures, led by Kayla Morrison's 24. Quick 5-4 point guard Kayla O'Rear scored 20, most on fast breaks or breakaways off steals. Nicole Hinton added 17.

Hume meets the winner of Monday's late game between No. 3 Montrose and No. 6 Ballard on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Who would Berry prefer to face?

"We got a win over Ballard and Montrose beat us," he said, "so an upset wouldn't break our hearts, but some of the girls would like a rematch with Montrose because we didn't play very well the last time we played them."

Sheldon vs. Miami

The No-4-seeded Sheldon Lady Panthers jumped to a 14-4 first-quarter lead, built it to 37-18 as the third period expired, then cruised to its win over No. 5 Miami.

The peaking Lady Panthers (15-9), winners of five of their last six, barely edged Miami 22-20 in a previous meeting.

Jessica Cornell led Sheldon with 10, while Jessie Moore tallied nine.

Sheldon earned the right to meet host and No. 1-seed Drexel on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

It will be the first time the two teams have met this season.

Sheldon coach Jenny Allard believes her team will match up pretty well.

"They don't have a lot of height," she said, "but they're real quick, a lot like us."

Bronaugh vs. Drexel

Bronaugh, the eighth seed, fell to No. 1 Drexel 61-19.

Karenza Frame, Sara Shaw and Brittany Mart shared scoring honors for the Lady Wildcats with four apiece.

Boys first-round play

No. 8 Sheldon vs. No. Drexel, today at 4:30 p.m.; No. 4 NEVC vs. No. 5 Hume, at 6; No. 2 Bronaugh vs. No. 7 Miami, at 7:30 and No. 3 Montrose vs. No. 6 Ballard at 9.
