Eithel E. Gookin

Eithel E. Gookin, 77, of Fairfield, Iowa, died at 12:50 p.m., Monday, March 8, 2004, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield, Iowa. She was born on Jan. 5, 1927, in rural Chariton, Iowa, the daughter of Harley and Golda Agan Shore. On June 6, 1948, she married Leland B. Gookin in Chariton, Iowa, and he survives of the home.

Eithel has lived in the Fairfield, Iowa, community for 53 years. She graduated from Chariton High School, the class of 1944, and attended classes at Drake University. She was the middle school secretary for the Fairfield Community School System for 24 years. Eithel was a member of the First Baptist Church and Maxine Bates Circle. In her church activities she was an organist and pianist and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Salt group and Questers. They were members of the Weakenders Camping Group, Fairfield, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband, Leland B. Gookin, Fairfield, Iowa; one daughter, Denise J. Nelson and her husband, Donald, Nevada, Mo.; one son, Myron Gookin and his wife Ann, Fairfield, Iowa; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Luella Bebout, Newton, Iowa, Aletha Feight, Chariton, Iowa, and Elaine Keeney, Chariton, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Raymond Shore.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 12, at First Baptist Church in Fairfield, Iowa, with the Rev. Jim Wotherspoon officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m., Friday at the Chariton Cemetery, Chariton, Iowa. Family visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday evening at the Behner Funeral Home, Fairfield, Iowa.
