With music from the 1950s and '60s setting the tone in the background, car enthusiasts from Iantha, Lamar, Nevada and Fort Scott -- and even farther afield -- gathered Saturday to show off their classic cars at the 11th annual Route 54 Cruiser's Car Show on Saturday in El Dorado Springs.

"We just love coming to these shows," said Fae Moser, who attended the show with her husband Ron. "It gives us a chance to get out and see what others have got and to show off what we've done."

The Mosers, of Iantha, Mo., brought their aquamarine and white 1957 Chevy which set a nostalgic mood with fuzzy dice hanging from the opened hood and a Sonic car hop doll, complete with roller skates, which posed at the driver's side window.

Cars were divided into 16 classes with first, second and third place awards in each class. Modified cars with bodies that had been chopped and molded sat next to cars that had been restored to like-new condition. Paint jobs varied from sedate black to multi-colored hues never seen on a new car showroom.

Frank Arnold of Nevada was at the show with his red 1951 Ford pickup.

"I love going to these shows but I can't get to as many as I'd like," Arnold said. "I'm in the National Guard and when they say stay, I stay."

Some exhibitors come for the camaraderie they experience at the shows, sharing their enthusiasm for classic cars with others in the area.

Dixie Small of Lockwood was touching up the finish on a 1966 Ford Galaxy.

"You get to meet a lot of people who come to see the cars," Small said. "It's nice when people tell you they appreciate your car."
