The Nevada City Council made several changes to traffic codes at the request of Nevada Police Chief Christine Keim, including a new rule designed to make life a little easier for handicapped drivers.

The new rule will allow handicapped individuals to park on the opposite side of the street so that a handicapped driver can get out of the car onto the sidewalk instead of the street. The car must have valid handicapped plates or handicapped tag visible in the vehicle.

Other changes include:

* Requiring that the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices to be the standard for types, sizes, etc. of traffic control devices used within the city.

* Allowing drivers, regardless of age, with a valid instruction permit to operate motor vehicles under the conditions of their permit (the code currently states that all drivers must be 16 years old).

* Clarifying the 120-minute time limit for the angle parking in the center of Cherry Street on the south side of the Nevada Square. This ordinance also allows emergency medical care providers and other assignees as designated by police or fire officials to be authorized to handle traffic, etc., at accident scenes.
