100 years ago:

Brakeman killed at Stotesbury

A fatal accident occurred Thursday morning at the Kansas City Southern depot at Stotesbury as a result of which accident Fred Cummings, a brakeman, was killed.

The unfortunate man was standing near the track waiting for the front cars to pass when he was struck across the abdomen by a loose plank on a car loaded with lumber.

None of the train crew witnessed the accident and the train pulled out and left Cummings.

The good citizens of Stotesbury cared for the unfortunate brakeman until he could be taken to the hospital in Pittsburg.

75 years ago:

Fifth annual event held on high school lawn Thursday night

A record crowd of approximately 1,150 persons attended the fifth annual "chuck wagon" supper held last night on the lawn of the high school. The event, which is the one fund-raising project of the P.T.A. unit each year, has become a tradition and is one of the important activities at the beginning of the school year.
