NHS cross country gets fourth at C.J.

The Nevada Tiger cross country team finished fourth out of 11 teams at the Carl Junction Classic Thursday.

The Nevada harriers finished behind Carthage, East Newton and Webb City in the meet, and had three runners in the top 15.

Mason Benn continued to be the leading runner on the squad, he finished seventh overall individually, finishing the course in 17 minutes and 39 seconds.

Freshman Trevor Hinkle also continued his impressive year, finishing only 19 seconds behind Benn to take 12th place.

Jim Fay was the third Tiger runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 18:01 and getting 14th place.

The other varsity runners were Bill Fay, who finished 38th with a time of 19:40, and Curtiss Davis, who was 47th in 20:32.

The Nevada junior varsity boys had the second place individual in Stephen Newland, who ran the course in 19:15.

Nevada teammate Mark Reed was right behind Newland, finishing in 19:34 for fourth. Also racing JV were Darren Chapman, Jacob Query, Nash Smith, Ty Lero, Taylor Hall, John Christie and Will Craigen.

There were three varsity girls participating, with Cassie Driskle finishing in 25:56 (38th individually), Vanessa Hancock finished in 26:28 (42nd) and Alyssa Byers completed the course in 29:01 (55th).

In the middle school race (on a smaller course that is only 1.6 miles long) featured Nevada's Todd Bryer, who was third with a time of 10:07.

On the girls' side in the middle school competition were Davon Smith and Emily Watts. Smith had a time of 11:22 (fifth individually) and Watts finished in 11:53 (ninth).

Next up for Nevada is a meet at Neosho this Thursday, then they will host a meet on Oct. 21.

The district cross country meet will also be in Nevada on Oct. 30.
