Group supports the troops in living color

Members of the American Legion hope to see red. Lots of red, every Friday, as long as troops are in harm's way overseas. They're urging everyone to wear red on Fridays to support the troops. It's a vivid color American Legion information officer Ronnie Browne says will send a bold message of support. "It'll let people know that in this part of the country we support our troops, no matter where they are," Browne said. "We haven't had the support we ought to have for the military since World War II, and it's going to take that kind of support to pull us through this." The American Legion has renewed efforts to bolster support for all veterans, especially those fighting for freedom today. "We're all veterans. Most of us are retired now but we'd go if we needed to. If you can read, thank a teacher. If you can read in English, thank a veteran. A lot of troops are in harm's way." Browne said. One way the Post is reaching out is in support of the local Bushwhacker Quilt Guild's effort to make more than 150 quilts for soldiers in Iraq, by donating a total of $130 to the effort, to buy supplies. Standing in front of one of the quilts constructed for the project are back row, Joe Swearingin, First National Bank, one of several businesses supporting the effort; Kerin Hatch, who first conceived the quilt project, Ann Jones, Post Commander Gene Carr and Browne; front row, Debbie Wortman, First National Bank; Post Chaplain Denny McClellan; John Watts, Sons of the American Legion; and Kathy Car, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
