100 years ago:

Todd shooting trial continues

When court opened this morning the court room was crowded with spectators and from the expressions on faces it was evident that the day as one of more than usual importance. The attorneys were busily engaged in brief consultations and taking last glances at their notes. Today's session meant much to the defendant Dr. Todd. The state attorneys were making their arguments, their final efforts to convict Dr. Todd of a serious crime and if successful would only deprive him of his liberty and possibly life, but would cast the darkest of shadows over his devoted family. On the other hand his attorneys were to make a supreme effort for his freedom and to draw him from under the stain of the charge of murder.

Christmas carols by the Lions Club

The members of the Lions Club visited all parts of the city last night, singing Christmas carols as the journeyed over the city in James Logan's motor bus, visiting the homes and hospitals where there were persons who will be unable to attend the various Christmas entertainments.

The singing of the Christmas carols was directed by the Lions 'song leader, D.R. McGiboney, and the custom of bringing appropriate Christmas music to the shut-ins will be continued each Christmas season in the future.

50 years ago:

Rotarians are entertained by fifth and sixth grade students

A group of fifth and sixth grade students from Benton and Franklin schools entertained the Rotary Club Thursday noon with a musical narration of the Christmas story. The students were under the direction of Mrs. Agnes Brown, elementary art supervisor and were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. B.R. Kapple.
