State Auditor Claire McCaskill and members of the state auditor's office will discuss the findings and recommendations contained in a petition audit relating to the city of Nevada. The public delivery of the report will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 7, at the Nevada/Vernon County Community Center, 200 N. Ash, Nevada.

The state auditor began an audit of the city of Nevada after receiving a citizen's petition. State law requires the state auditor to conduct an audit of any political subdivision if asked to do so by enough registered voters in that political subdivision. State law also requires that the entity being audited pay for the audit.

In January 2004, a petition asking for the audit circulated in Nevada had a total of 521 signatures, with 472 of them certified as registered voters by the county clerk -- more than enough to require the audit, but those petitioners have had to wait more than a year for the final results.

In March, auditors first met with the city, then gathered information.

Along the way, another special audit was conducted, having been requested by the Missouri State Highway Patrol after Nevada Finance Director Ron Chandler reported irregularities in some receipts and deposits that appeared to point to about $40,000 in missing monies.

A criminal investigation followed. So far, no charges have been filed in connection with those missing funds.

That audit was completed and the related report released in September.

In December, auditors said they'd finished their initial report and presented it to the city for the city's response.

The complete audit report will be available to the public following the meeting.
