Disasters can happen anywhere, any time -- and it pays to be prepared. That's the message Nevada Police Chief Christine Keim and her husband Phil, who works with the city on emergency response issues, wanted to communicate to the Nevada Rotary Club during a presentation Thursday.

Keim said disasters of many types could happen here -- a train wreck, a tornado, an earthquake are all possibilities. She admits some scenarios are more likely than others, but none should be discounted as impossible -- even acts of terrorism.

Terrorist groups, particularly certain types of domestic terrorists, could strike anywhere. Special interest groups and anti-government groups have been known to strike in all sorts of places, and the Midwest isn't immune. A dramatic example of that is the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, bombed in a domestic terrorist act.

So, cities and individuals need to be prepared for disasters, with a plan and supplies stored that could be used if the worst happens.

The Keims offered a brief overview of some of the efforts area emergency responders are undertaking, and noted that individuals need to take steps to protect themselves as well.

It's important that families know what they should do if there's any type of disaster -- where to go, what to take, who's responsible for what.

"We want to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best," Keim said.
