Butler Elks to organize

The Nevada Elks met last night and a number of the Butler gentlemen who are members of the Nevada order were present. The Butler Elks have been anxious for some time to organize an order in their own town but the population of the town heretofore prevented it.

It seems that no Elk order can be organized in a town with less than 5,000 inhabitants. The census report gives Butler a population of only 3,150 but the gentlemen here last night stated that a new census shows that Butler has more than 5,000 inhabitants.

Upon this statement, the Nevada Elks withdrew their protest so it is now up to the Grand Lodge to say whether Butler shall or shall not have and Elks lodge. It seems to be the general opinion that the Grand Lodge will favor Butler.

Burglars ransack Metz High school office, steal $8

Vernon County Sheriff Les Hunt and his deputy, Elmer Phillips, received a call at 5:30 o'clock this morning informing them of a break-in at the Metz High School.

Ralph Smith, custodian at the school, discovered the burglary when he opened the school this morning.

The burglars had apparently pried open a west door of the schoolhouse, ransacked the superintendent's office and knocked open the safe.

After obtaining approximately $8 from the safe, the intruders continued to the school lunchroom where they drank two cartons of milk and broke into a deep freeze locker.

So far as could be determined immediately, nothing other than the money and milk were taken.
